It's been a pleasure putting together this website, but here's the thing: Appearances both are and aren’t everything.
70 years on from its first utterance, “don’t judge a book by its cover” still needs stern drumming into the heads of so many. It’s not likely to end soon; people will continue to judge and form conclusions about others they don’t know, things they don’t understand, based solely on what they see. But no amount of criticism should be reason to steer you away from how you perceive and want to present yourself.
The experts we spoke to talked about image crafting in a social media centred world. Whether it’s through silicone, ink or muscle (or whatever comes next), finding a way to set yourself apart that’s both novel and acceptable is a challenge that intensifies with the birth of every new trend. It’s exhausting, yet so immensely rewarding when you succeed, others will be able to feel that confidence radiating off you; even if you don’t yourself.
It’s funny how when we embarked on this journey it was under the impression we were seeking youths who perhaps weren’t feeling too good about themselves, and needed a way to stand out. But these very same millennials we’ve met have taught us more about finding ourselves than any sociologist ever can (shoutout still to Professor Han). The beauty of carving an identity doesn’t lie in waving it around like a newly earned diploma. It lies in the quiet satisfaction that after trial and tribulation, you’ve finally found something that molds uniquely to your tastes, your ideals, your person.
And that, we hope, is when you know you’ve truly done you.
